There are current discussions ongoing about the possibility of apprenticeships linked with orthodontic therapy training. To clarify some misconceptions about this, this short article by Michael Wheeler (Health Education England Programme Manager for Dental Apprenticeships) explains how apprenticeships are being introduced in all areas of work, including healthcare.

In 2007 the General Dental Council permitted the registration of Orthodontic Therapists, after a rigorous curriculum and methods of assessment had been agreed.
The British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN), the UK’s professional association for dental nurses, and the Orthodontic National Group (ONG), the only organization specifically for orthodontic dental nurses and therapists, have reached a reciprocal agreement on registration fees for conferences, study days, etc.
The Orthodontic National Group (ONG) the only organisation for orthodontic therapists and orthodontic nurses established since 1994 and affiliated with BOS, is offering BADN members the same registration fee as ONG members for study day events.
The opportunity has arisen for the orthodontic therapy training pathway to develop and become an apprenticeship.
